The influence of Mg2+ ions on the ion-activity product of calcium and carbonate dissolved in seawater has been investigated. The present approach is based mainly on: (1) the preponderance of this element in the marine system; (2) the observations by Weyl (1965), Jansen and Kitano (1963), and more recently by Plummer and Mackenzie (1974) on the higher solubility of magnesian calcite relative to pure calcite; and (3) the inferences drawn from our laboratory studies on the Ca2+—Mg2+ ion-exchange behaviour on surfaces of pure calcite. From these considerations, the pK value corresponding to a calcite containing 12 mole% of MgCO, has been estimated to be 7.7± 0.1 at 20°C. This value has serious reflections on the extent of saturation of seawater with respect to calcium-carbonate polymorphs. The reassessed degree of carbonate saturation for an average warm-surface ocean turns out to be only between 1.0 and 2.2.  相似文献

Abstract Sponge bioerosion is a result of tissue expansion of endolithic sponges in calcium carbonate substrates. The efficiency of erosion by the sponges can be affected by substrate features, which are thus also likely to influence the way in which the sponge will grow. A field experiment was conducted, in which sponge tissue was grafted to biogenic blocks cut from the corals Goniopora tenuidens, massive Porites sp., Astreopora listeri, Favites halicora, Favia pallida, Goniastrea retiformis and Cyphastrea serailia, and the clam Tridacna squamosa, to investigate colonisation capabilities and growth patterns of Cliona orientalis Thiele, 1900 after 9 months of the experiment. C. orientalis is not substrate‐specific. It invaded > 90 % of the different substrate blocks and penetrated them to varying depths, but usually only down to slightly more than 1 cm. Lateral penetration clearly exceeded depth penetration. Enlargement of surface area versus restricted depth penetration benefits the symbiotic zooxanthellae located in the sponge's surface. Structural irregularities and barriers such as coral dissepiments temporarily deflected the direction of tissue growth and created characteristic tissue patch patterns in different substrates. Tissue growth may be more pronounced in substrates of higher density and lower pore volume, but evidence was only slight. Protection against predation is better in denser materials, which may stimulate the sponge's tissue growth especially in shallower substrate depth. In more porous substrates, favoured by grazers and corallivores, relatively more tissue was located in deeper layers.  相似文献

Washed-up chondrichthyan egg cases were collected along three different sandy beaches around Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, between April 2016 and March 2017. GPS location was recorded upon collection, and, after being soaked in fresh water for 12 hours, egg cases were identified to species level. Additionally, boreholes, damage, biofouling and state of the hatchling slit were recorded. The hatching success of each egg case was inferred from these factors. Over the year, 6 996 egg cases of nine species were collected. Egg cases of the tiger catshark Halaelurus natalensis had the highest hatching rate at 70%. Egg cases of the leopard catshark Poroderma pantherinum had the highest predation rate at 57%. Season had no significant effect either on overall egg-case counts or on per-species counts. Location, however, significantly affected the overall egg-case counts, as well as per-species counts, with the exceptions of H. natalensis and the St Joseph Callorhinchus capensis. The results of this study provide insight into chondrichthyan species occurrence and spatial variation along a section of the Garden Route in the Western Cape Province and can act as a baseline for future research.  相似文献

A highly mobile system for accurate measurements of wind speed and horizontal turbulence in the lowest few hundred meters of the atmosphere is presented. It consists of a light-weight sonde (only 50 g, including batteries that permit 12 h of continuous operation) which can be easily lifted by a small kite in winds below 5 m/s and up to at least 25 m/s. In winds below 5 m/s, a small kytoon may be used instead. The signals from the sonde are received by a standard FM-radio equipped with a frequency converter, and data are recorded on ordinary cassette tapes. Field tests against towermounted precision instruments were performed at two sites during neutral and unstable conditions with the sonde suspended 25 m below a small kite, the measuring heights being 11 and 18 m respectively during the two test series. Mean wind speeds are found to be accurate to within ±0.2 m/s. Wind speed spectra obtained with the flying sonde can be evaluated up to 0.5 Hz and are found to agree closely with the spectra of the longitudinal component recorded simultaneously by the tower-mounted instrument at the same height. After correction for high frequency loss, which amounted to 5% at this low height (it is expected to decrease rapidly with height), the standard deviation of the wind recorded by the sonde agreed to within 2% with that obtained by the reference instrument. A notable result of the field tests is that there was no sign of degradation of the performance of the sonde in strong turbulence conditions.  相似文献

The late Precambrian Shadli Metavolcanics of SE Egypt constitute a slightly metamorphosed bimodal sequence that has been previously interpreted as manifesting volcanic activity at an island arc. We report the first Rb-Sr geochronologic, trace element (including REE), and Nd isotopic data for these rocks. Two types of basalt are recognized, the stratigraphically lower suite having compositions like N-MORB ferrobasalt while the overlying basalt is similar to slightly fractionated E-MORB. The two basalt types were derived from melting of a strongly depleted source, most likely within the upper 60–75 km of the upper mantle. The origin of the felsic melts is problematic, and these could either have fractionated from a mafic melt or resulted from melting of juvenile crust. The mafic and felsic lavas yield a Rb-Sr isochron age of 712±24 Ma that probably represents the time of volcanic eruption. The trace element characteristics of both mafic and felsic members of the Shadli Metavolcanics show few of the hallmarks of subduction-related melts, and we reject the hypothesis that these formed at an island arc. Instead, the field and geochemical data are most consistent with the hypothesis that these rocks originated in a magmatic rift, where the eruption of large volumes of lava accompanied large-scale lithospheric extension. This inference suggests that the tectonic setting of the important 700–715 Ma crust-forming event in NE Africa and Arabia needs to be critically reexamined.
Zusammenfassung Die spätpräkambrischen Shadli-Metavulkanite in der südöstlichen Eastern Desert von Ägypten sind eine schwach metamorphe bimodale Basalt-Rhyodazit-Abfolge, die bisher als Ausdruck eines Inselbogen-Vulkanismus gedeutet wurde. Zwei Basalt-Typen können aufgrund ihrer unterschiedlichen chemischen Zusammensetzung unterschieden werden: der stratigraphisch untere Typ ist ein N-MORB ähnlicher Ferrobasalt, während der überlagernde Typ Charakteristika eines leicht fraktionierten E-MORB aufweist. Die beiden Basaltvarietäten werden von stark an inkompatiblen Elementen verarmten Schmelzen aus den oberen 60–75 km des Mantels abgeleitet. Die Entstehung der sauren Metavulkanite ist nicht eindeutig geklärt; sowohl Fraktionierung aus einer mafischen Schmelze als auch Aufschmelzung juveniler Kruste vom Inselbogen-Typ sind denkbar. Die mafischen und felsischen Gesteine definieren zusammen ein Rb-Sr-Isochronenalter von 712 ± 24 Ma, das wir als den Zeitraum der Eruption deuten. Die Spurenelement-Verteilung der Shadli-Metavulkanite weist keine der charakteristischen Merkmale von Subduktionsmagmatismus auf, und wir sehen daher keinen direkten Zusammenhang mit einer Inselbogen-Entwicklung. Wir interpretieren den Shadli-Vulkanismus als Resultat eines Riftprozesses in junger kontinentaler Kruste, ähnlich dem Rio Grande-Rift oder dem Afar-Dreieck, wo starke Lithosphärendehnung die Förderung großer Lavamengen ermöglichte. Diese Interpretation stellt das einfache Schema einer panafrikanischen Krustenbildung durch Inselbogen-Addition im arabisch-nubischen Schild in Frage und erfordert eine Neubewertung bisheriger Modellvorstellungen.

Résumé Les roches volcaniques faiblement métamorphisées du Précambrien tardif de Shadli dans le Sud-Est de l'Egypte se caractérisent par une séquence bimodale qui était jusqu'ici interprétée comme résultant d'un volcanisme d'arc insulaire. Nous présentons ici les premières données isotopiques (Rb-Sr, Nd) obtenues pour ces roches ainsi que des données d'éléments en trace (y compris les Terres Rares). Deux types principaux de basaltes peuvent être distingués: les basaltes qui se trouvent dans la partie inférieure de la colonne stratigraphique, ont une composition comparable aux ferrobasaltes de type N-MORB, tandis que les roches se trouvant dans la partie supérieure de la séquence s'apparentent plutôt aux E-MORB légèrement fractionnés. Les deux types de basalte proviennent de la fusion partielle d'un manteau fortement appauvri, et ce à une profondeur probable de 60 à 75 km dans le manteau supérieur. L'origine des laves acides pose, quant à elle, quelques problèmes: elles peuvent s'être formées par cristallisation fractionnée à partir d'un liquide basique, ou alors elles sont le produit de la fusion partielle d'une croûte juvénile. La combinaison des données Rb-Sr obtenues pour les roches acides et basiques permet l'obtention d'une isochrone définissant un âge de 712 ± 24 Ma. Cet âge est interprété comme datant les éruptions volcaniques. Les données d'éléments en traces obtenues pour les laves basiques et acides ne présentent aucune des caractéristiques associées au volcanisme d'arc insulaire. Par conséquent, nous rejetons l'hypothèse selon laquelle les roches volcaniques de Shadli se seraient formées dans un contexte d'arc insulaire. Les données géochimiques et de terrain seraient plutôt en accord avec une hypothèse selon laquelle les roches volcaniques métamorphiques de Shadli se seraient formées dans une zone de rift où de très volumineux épanchements de laves auraient succédé à une extension à grande échelle de la lithosphère. Cette interprétation des données nous conduit à suggérer un réexamen critique du contexte tectonique entourant la période de formation crustale se situant entre 700 a 715 Ma, dans le nord-est de l'Afrique ainsi qu'en Arabie.

The distribution of sulphur isotope compositions in the Åmmeberg sulphide ore deposit is discussed. The 34S values for various sulphides show a complex pattern of fluctuations between isotopic equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions. This feature as well as the observed variations in the 34S values of galena and sphalerite are interpreted to have originated from successive pulses of sulphide-forming solutions. On the basis of geological field criteria and sulphur isotope data, the Ammeberg deposit is considered to be a typical distal mineralization, belonging to the volcanic-exhalative group of ore deposits. The banded structure of the ore, the spatial separation of Pb and Zn and the presence of discrete, persistant ore layers probably relate to the type of convective system that created the mineral-forming solutions and to the various processes taking place when the brines were expelled onto the sea floor.
Zusammenfassung Es wird die Verteilung von Schwefelisotopenzusammensetzungen in der Åmmeberg Sulfidlagerstätte diskutiert. Die 34S-Werte für verschiedene Sulfide zeigt ein kompliziertes Schwankungsmuster zwischen Isotopengleichgewichts- und Isotopenungleichgewichtsbedingungen. Dieses Merkmal zusammen mit den beobachteten 34S Schwankungen von Bleiglanz und Zinkblende werden dahingehend interpretiert, daß sie ihren Ursprung im anhaltenden Zustrom von sulfidhaltigen Lösungen hatten. Auf der Basis von geologischen Geländebefunden und Schwefelisotopendaten wird die Åmmeberg Lagerstätte als eine typische distale Mineralisation eingestuft, welche zur vulkanisch-exhalativen Lagerstättengruppe gehört. Die gebänderte Struktur des Erzes, die räumliche Trennung von Blei und Zink und die Anwesenheit von gesondert durchziehenden Erzlagen sind zum konvektiven System in Beziehung zu setzen, welches die mineralformenden Lösungen lieferte. Ebenfalls zeigt sich ein Zusammenhang zu den verschiedenen Prozessen, welche abliefen als die Sole auf den Meeresboden ausgestoßen wurde.

Résumé L'auteur discute la distribution des compositions du soufre dans le gisement de sulfure d'Åmmeberg. Les valeurs de 34S pour divers sulfures présentent des fluctuations complexes entre les conditions d'équilibre et de non-équilibre isotopique.Cette distribution, ainsi que les variations observées de 34S de la galène et de la blende sont interprétées comme résultant d'arrivées successives de solutions sulfurantes. Sur la base de critères géologiques de terrain et des données relatives aux isotopes du soufre, le gisement d'Åmmeberg est considéré comme une minéralisation typiquement distale, appartenant au groupe volcanique exhalatif. La structure rubanée du minerai, la séparation spatiale du Pb et du Zn et la présence de couches de minerai discrètes et continues doivent vraisemblablement être mises en relation avec le type de système convectif qui a engendré les solutions minéralisantes et avec les divers processus qui sont entrés en jeu lorsque les saumures se sont répandues sur le fond de la mer.

Empirical models of molecular ion densities (N2 +, NO+, O2 +) and the electron density (N e ) are presented in the altitude interval 50–4000 km as functions of time (diurnal, annual), space (position, altitude) and solar flux (F 10.7). Using observations of 6 satellites (AE-C, AE-D, AE-E, ALOUETTE-2, ISIS-1, ISIS-2), 4 incoherent scatter stations (Arecibo, Jicamarca, Millstone Hill, St Santin) and more than 700 D-region profiles, this model describes the global gross features of the ionosphere for quiet geophysical conditions (K p 3).The molecular ion densities and the electron density increase with increasing altitude up to a maximum (or several maxima) - and decrease from thereon with increasing height. Between ~80 and 200 km, the main ionic constituents are NO+ and O2 +; below ~80 km cluster ions are predominating. During local summer conditions the molecular ions and N e increase around polar latitudes and decrease correspondingly during local winter. The diurnal variations are intrinsically coupled to the individual plasma layers; in general, the molecular ion and electron densities are enhanced during daytime and depleted during nighttime (for details and exceptions, see text).  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to analyse how cross-border commuting differed from intranational commuting in Sweden, and how cross-border mobilities affected spatial integration. The authors analysed patterns and spatial flows of cross-border commuting by comparing them with characteristics of intranational commuting. In the article, they explore the assumption that the border constitutes an ‘engine’ for work-related mobility, which affects processes of spatial integration in cross-border areas. The empirical material comprised data from surveys of commuting from the Swedish county of Värmland to Norway and commuting within Värmland. The findings showed that cross-border commuting shared common features with intranational commuting, including how the frequency of commuting was dependent on distance. The motives for commuting differed, and the reasons for working in Norway were economic rather than professional. In terms of spatial integration, cross-border commuting was mainly one-directional, from Sweden to Norway, while leisure mobility and migration tended to be in the opposite direction. The authors conclude that the border region is characterised by integration through specialisation, which involves a permanent state of ‘transient’ mobility. Thus, a win-win situation can be distinguished, in which the border serves as a resource and an ‘engine’ for cross-border integration, mobility and economic activities.  相似文献

To provide insights into the long‐term evolution of aquatic ecosystems without human interference, we here evaluate a decadal‐ to centennial‐scale‐resolution diatom record spanning about 12 ka of the Holsteinian interglacial (Marine Isotope Stage 11c). Using a partially varved sediment core from the Dethlingen palaeolake (northern Germany), which has previously been studied for palynological and microfacies signals, we document the co‐evolution of the aquatic and surrounding terrestrial environment. The diatom record is dominated by the genera Stephanodiscus, Aulacoseira, Ulnaria and Fragilaria. Based on the diatom assemblages and physical sediment properties, the evolution of the Dethlingen palaeolake can be subdivided into three major phases. During the oldest phase (lasting ~1900 varve years), the lake was ~10–15 m deep and characterized by anoxic bottom‐water conditions and a high nutrient content. The following ~5600 years exhibited water depths >20 m, maximum diatom and Pediastrum productivity, and a peak in allochtonous nutrient input. During this phase, water‐column mixing became more vigorous, resulting in a breakdown of anoxia. The youngest lake phase (~4000–5000 years) was characterized by decreasing water depth, turbulent water conditions and decreased nutrient loading. Based on our palaeolimnological data, we conclude that the evolution of the Dethlingen palaeolake during the Holsteinian interglacial responded closely to (i) changes within the catchment area (as documented by vegetation and sedimentation) related to the transition from closed forests growing on nutrient‐rich soils (mesocratic forest phase) to open forests developing on poor soils (oligocratic forest phase), and (ii) short‐term climate variability as reflected in centennial‐scale climate perturbations.  相似文献
